| Called
Gilbert Goch "The Red" after the fiery color of his hair. He was heir to his grandmother Isabel Marshall, and the Marshall (Pembr oke) lands, as well as his father's Clare lands. He was undoubtedly the most powerful magnate of the realm, holding land i n 22 counties, in the later years under Henry III and Edward I, until h is death in 1295. Upon his marriage to Joan of England, he resigned all of his estates to t he crown, presumably including the honors of Hertford and Gloucester, w hich were then to be re-assigned to the heirs of her body. |
